Missing money information

 This is information from a recent show about how to find funds.

Go to MissingMoney.com to find unclaimed property in states where you’ve lived or worked. You can search 49 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico in one shot. The site, which is endorsed by NAUPA and the National Association of State Treasurers, also gives you links and contact information for every state. (Hawaii isn't in the collective database yet, but you can search for assets there by using the direct state link on MissingMoney.com.)

TreasuryHunt.gov is the place to go to look for unclaimed matured savings bonds.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the National Credit Union Association sites let you search for unclaimed funds from banks and credit unions that went out of business.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation and the National Registry of Unclaimed Retirement Benefits can help you find abandoned pensions and 401(k) plans. In addition, the newly launched Retirement Savings Lost & Found Database can help you locate unpaid retirement benefits.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development lets you see if you’re eligible for a refund from an FHA-insured mortgage.

The Department of Labor's Workers Owed Wages site helps you recover unpaid earnings.

Tax season begins

 I know this is the time of year everyone looks forward to and that’s “tax time”! Can you hear the sarcasm in my voice? Seriously though, the 2025 tax filing season will begin on Jan. 27, which marks the first day the IRS will accept and process individual tax returns for 2024. Most taxpayers must file federal returns and pay taxes owed by April 15 this year to avoid penalties and interest. But filers affected by natural disasters could have more time. There are some free filing options. IRS Free File, which offers free guided tax prep through software partners, opened on Jan. 10. Eligible taxpayers can electronically file returns prepared via Free File partners starting on Jan. 27. Many are eligible for free tax preparation via programs like Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly. Another free option for military members and certain veterans is MilTax. Just as a reminder here be sure to wait until you have ALL tax information from whatever accounts you have before doing your taxes.

Longevity

 It’s always great to hear stories of supercentenarians and a soccer-loving nun from Brazil is believed to have become the world’s oldest living person at nearly 117 years old following the recent death of a Japanese woman. Sister Inah Canabarro was so skinny growing up that many didn’t think she would survive childhood. But she could be seen cracking jokes and reciting prayers in a video shot by an organization that tracks supercentenarians around the globe. The definition of a “supercentenarian is a person who is 110 years or older. This age is achieved by about one in 1,000 centenarians. Supercentenarians typically live a life free of significant age-related diseases until shortly before the maximum human lifespan is reached. Sister Inah has been determined to be the world’s oldest living person validated by early life records. The secret to longevity? Her Catholic faith, she says. “I’m young, pretty and friendly — all very good, positive qualities that you have, too.”
