What is a Portable Retirement Plan?

What is a Portable Retirement Plan? Portable Retirement Plans allow employees to take their retirement savings with them when they change jobs without losing their accumulated savings. The "portability" aspect means employees can take their retirement savings with them from one employer to another without losing accrued funds. And, unlike most 401(k) plans, employees don't have to go through the expense or hassle of a rollover when they give notice, and employers don't have to worry about abandoned plans left by employees. Filing your taxes

It is tax time and I’ve been seeing many recommendations from tax experts that you don’t want to wait to file your taxes for 2024. Here’s why: tax identity theft remains a huge problem and the sooner you file the better chance you can block thieves from using your Social Security number to file a fraudulent return. Whether you’re filing early because you’re eager for a refund or want to protect yourself from identity theft, you’ll still need a complete and accurate return to avoid delays. You should always double-check key details like your name, Social Security number, banking information and other filing data. With thousands of IRS layoffs this week, some experts worry the cuts could impact taxpayer service. But your refund shouldn’t be affected if you file an accurate return electronically and select direct deposit for payment. Typically, you can expect the IRS to process your e-filed return within 21 days.

Avoiding finances

I read that we do some crazy stuff just to avoid finances. One in five Americans would rather spend one hour in jail than work out a five-year budget. 32% would rather go to the DMV than work on a detailed financial plan. 26% would rather talk politics with somebody they disagree with than write a financial plan with a family member. 34% would rather post their most embarrassing photo of themselves on social media than post a screenshot of their account balance. And 27% would rather get stung by a bee than move their money to a new bank. I know that dealing with finances for some folks is the “last” thing they want to do, that’s why procrastination happens as often as it does. If you’ve been listening to the show for a while, you know I can take some of your anxiety away, with a no cost, no obligation appointment. Appliance prices

Most of us at one point or another have had to replace a major appliance in our home. And if you have had to do this in the last 5 to 10 years or so, do you feel like they don’t last like they used to? A housing market research firm has found that appliances are becoming more modern and high-tech but they also don’t last as long. From 1995-2005, the average homeowner replaced appliances consistently every 12 to 13 years. Today it is every eight to nine years. And at the same time they are spending way more on the appliances too. Appliances are expensive and depending on circumstances, if you need a repair person to come out, it has to make sense that the bill for parts and labor isn’t more than the value of the appliance. What can you do to help yourself out if you need to fix or replace an appliance? First use your emergency fund to pay for the purchase or to have it fixed. If you don’t have an emergency fund, some retailers offer a trade where they take some off your bill for your old appliance. There are places that fix old appliances and sell them cheaper than new. If you can wait until the appliance goes on sale, there are seasonal times of the year that are cheaper than others. Go to yoursafemoneyshow.com for more details.
